meaningless stuff - like smilla's little cast; champagne corks from milestone BDs; dozens of happy fortune cookie fortunes; colored glass chips from a dream trip to sweden; purple chopsticks from a dinner with lindsey at ohio u; artfully designed knife/spoon/fork combo from denmark; a 3D button of john lennon from the '60s; needlepoint coasters my sister made for me when she was ten; political cartoons celebrating obama's election; the first npr tape of santaland diaries read by david sedaris, before he was famous; pizza box labels describing our favorite combo; vintage cookie cutters i had to have, but never used.

yea... this stuff, tokens from happy times and great memories. stuff that shapes our lives, stuff we just can't toss. flotsam + jetsam?... i'm not so sure.

i'm starting a new series called immediate delight + lasting pleasure!
in this series of occasional posts i'll feature things that truly leave me instantly delighted and happy long after, i've crossed their path. first up is the amazing sculpture of contemporary artist jay kelly, that i saw during a recent trip to the roy boyd gallery in chicago. each sculpture is around 6" tall or smaller, and all are created by the artist without using any found objects. you should check out kelly's drawings too, for an extra shot of delight.

anyway... nuff said, i hope you'll enjoy the way his brain works as much as i do!

my favorite new fall/winter nail color is deborah lippman's billionaire. to me it's a dark, edgy, sophisticated g i jane green, deborah calls it a "moody hunter green." her names like "i know what boys like" and "stormy weather" are as quirky as her inspired colors. deborah's lacquers are also gentle on your nails, stay on forever and don't contain nasty things like toluene, formaldehyde or DBP!

last weekend i hit one of many estate sales in search of product for boommodern.com, or just scoring something inspiring for props. i came up empty on the first front, but was fascinated and amused to find these kids boots by Gaytees. curiously though, i didn't get 'em and left empty handed.

later that day i started obsessing about them and knew i should have picked them up. it dawned on me that i had a pair of these boots as a young kid in the 1960's. i remembered spending countless hours happily freezing my feet off playing in the snow, and splashing in the rain. i also realized that i could personally hold these little boots responsible, for the ever growing collection of Wellies, Kamiks and Blundstones that i love wearing so much today.

the next morning i raced back to the sale and there they were. so until i need 'em for a prop, i hope they're happy living on this shelf in our house.

On a trip to Sarasota, Florida I visited the spectacular Ca' d'Zan Mansion, home of Mable and John Ringling. Seated on 66 acres overlooking Sarasota Bay, this home and museum is nothing short of spectacular. Build between 1924-1925 this Venetian Gothic masterpiece, was the "last of the Gilded Age mansions" to be built in America.

However... as amazing as this home is, I keep going back to a photo I shot of this simple stairway off of the kitchen. For me it's the most beautiful, mysterious and serene space in the house!

i'm originally from michigan and have been told, i'm a bit over the top when it comes to my unwavering love for lake michigan. on a recent vacation i was once again rendered breathless by miles of pristine sugar sand, that's shared by humans and pups alike.

it's been a long time since i've had a vacation that was so relaxing and spiritually fulfilling. the million dollar views and endless hours of "just being" were nothing short of heaven... the time spent with family and gracious friends in their cottage was priceless!

if you've never been, i encourage you to visit my lake... just be sure to leave it better then you found it! :-)

i feel blessed to have three very funny, caring and talented sisters. my sister cindy has been creating custom decorative birdhouses for the last few years, and recently surprised me with this fabulous little house. each house is created from objects found in nature, and designed with the recipient in mind. no two houses are the same, and the range of styles and attention to detail is amazing and beautiful.

and have been quietly obsessing over it for the last couple months. i first spotted it at an antique show but painfully decided to leave it behind, (since we're already running a chair museum). last weekend it reappeared at another show and i knew it had to be mine.

one of the things i love about a piece like this is it's authenticity of color and form, so animated and comfortable too. as a modernism dealer i really appreciate the power of mixing a humble piece like this, into a modernist environment. for me... it's what makes a space truly fresh, personal and modern.

chairs... ya gotta love 'em and can never have too many!

internationally celebrated photographer marc hauser's curious, classic and mysterious photo of woody allen has been packed away in our archives for the last couple years. we recently brought this gem out of hiding to live with some of our other favorite pieces.

hauser has developed what he considers his strongest asset, his ability to employ whatever is available for lighting, location, and props. for us this intimate photo embodies all of these qualities, while totally capturing the essence of woody. check out his vast body of work. i hope you'll find it as inspiring as we do.

reflections on an iconic chair!
created by master italian designer joe colombo in 1964, this chair continues to be a marvel of industrial design. using only three pieces of interlocking bent plywood and no glue, this chair has a regal, almost unearthly quality. it's also happens to be just plain comfortable and isn't that really what a chair should be?

This Thursday February 3rd, 6 - 9:30pm, The Cleveland Institute of Art & The Cleveland Museum of Art (co-hosted by Grafton Nunes and David Franklin), presents night for a knight as Marie-Anne Toledano, Cultural Attaché at the French Consulate invests John Ewing as a Chevalier in the order of Arts and Letters. This distinction adds Ewing to an impressive list of international artists, including T.S. Eliot, Robert Redford, Jeanne Moreau, and Rudolf Nureyev.

Ewing has been named a Chevalier for his 25 years of promoting culture at both the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, where he is Director, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, where he serves as Associate Director of Film.

This special evening is being held at The CIA, with a 6pm cocktail reception of delectable hors d'oeuvres, cheeses, and wines will be served by Cleveland's top French brasserie, L'Albatros, featuring it sommelier and fromager, Brandon Chrostowski. Induction ceremony starts at 7:30 followed by one of Ewing's favorite films, the masterpiece Le ciel est a vous, (The Woman Who Dared - 1944), by acclaimed director Jean Grémillon.
